Memorable Events occurring on April 1

1853 - Cincinnati becomes the first city to employ full-time professional firefighters.

1889 - Josephine Cochran markets the first dishwasher.

1891 - The Wrigley Company is founded.

1970 - President Nixon signs a bill limiting cigarette advertisements.

1976 - Apple Computer, Inc. is founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

1991 - The Supreme Court rules jurors cannot be barred from serving due to race.

2004 - Google launches Gmail.

For those penny enthusiast, April 1st also represents NATIONAL ONE CENT DAY

The United States first issued a one-cent coin produced by a private mint in 1787. Benjamin Franklin designed it. On one side, it read "Mind Your Business" and on the other "We Are One." This coin was made of 100% copper and was larger than today's penny.

After 232 years of production, the last circulating U.S. penny was officially struck by the US Mint on November 12, 2025, at their Philadelphia facility.
